Types of Lubricants

Liquid Silk There are essentially three types of lubricants on the market with many variations within those types. We'll discuss each with the advantages and disadvantages of each.
  • Water-Based: These are the safest lubricants on the market for vaginal use. Water-based lubricants are condom compatible and do NOT cause yeast infections the way an oil/petroleum based product often does. If your water-based lubricant feels like it's drying too quickly, simply add a bit of water or saliva to it and it will re-activate. There are several types of water-based lubricants - flavored, unflavored, stimulating, warming, organic ingredients Eros Silicone Lubeand more. The type you choose is really a matter of personal preference. Some people have allergies to various ingredients. Often the problem ingredient is glycerine. If so, you'll want to look for lubricants that are glycerine free (we offer several).
  • Silicone-Based: Silicone lubricants are the latest and (some say) greatest in lubricants. They have been tested as safe for vaginal use. The biggest advantage to silicone lubricants is that they are waterproof. They can be used in the hot tub, shower, bath, pool or any other "wet" place. The biggest disadvantage is that they CANNOT be used with silicone toys such as Cyberskin. The two types of silicone are not compatible and it will change the shape of your toy.
  • Oil/Petroleum Based: DO NOT USE THESE!!! Actually, you'll have a hard time finding an oil or petroleum based product being sold as a lubricant these days. But these do includes things like Vasolene and Baby Oil. These types of products should NEVER be used vaginally as they trap all kinds of bacteria causing yeast infections and other unpleasant problems for women. Further, these products are not latex compatible. That means if you're using latex condoms for safer sex or you're using latex toys, they will be destroyed.

PID Alert! (Pelvic Inflammatory Disease): Nothing that goes into the anal area should ever be inserted into the vagina without being washed first. Optionally, you can use a condom for anal use and remove it or replace it for vaginal use (these work over toys too!). The reason is that the normal, healthy bacteria present in the rectum is not compatible with the normal, healthy bacteria in the vagina. Mixing the two often causes PID which can be a very serious disease, sometimes requiring hospitalization.
